CONTENT OF THE FUNCTION

As a scientific programmer at KBR you will be responsible for the implementation and development of various data infrastructures.

This function supports the objectives of two projects: DATA-KBR-BE and the KBR Virtual Lab, namely providing pre-curated and data-on-demand service to users. You will help think about how collections can be made available to users as data and how “Data on demand” services can be integrated to automate the compilation of data corpora.

In practice, this involves working on the technical and practical development of an Open Data Platform for KBR (data.kbr.be) as part of the ‘Belgica’ family of services such as BelgicaPress and Belgica Periodicals, and for the KBR Virtual Lab authentication and authorisation for users. You will implement APIs that allow querying the databases and exporting corpora. You will do this in consultation with BELNET.

This position is a transversal function. You will work within the Research & Innovation department at the Digital Research Lab, DIGIT and in close collaboration with the ICT department.

As a scientific programmer

  • You have software development skills and practical knowledge of web technologies (PHP including ideally the Symfony framework, JavaScript, REST API, etc.);
  • You have experience managing operating systems (Linux, Windows) and databases;
  • You have some experience in IT Service Management

As a project officer

  • You actively participate in work meetings;
  • You work closely with the relevant colleagues within KBR and with BELNET

CONTEXT OF THE FUNCTION

The project

This position supports two BELSPO projects. First, a BRAIN research project and then, the ESFRI programme. The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) is intended as a strategic tool to develop Europe’s scientific integration and increase its international reach. ESFRI’s mission is to support a coherent and strategic approach to policy-making on research infrastructures in Europe and to facilitate multilateral initiatives leading to better use and development of research infrastructures, at EU and international levels.

KBR, located on Mont des Arts in Brussels, is one of the ten federal scientific institutions. The Royal Library of Belgium is the national scientific library. It collects all Belgian publications and preserves, manages and studies an extensive cultural and historical heritage. TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Experience

No experience is required.

Diploma

You obtained a master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Science or Engineering.

You can also participate in the selection if you hold a diploma that you previously obtained and that is equated with the above-mentioned diplomas.

When assessing a foreign (non-EU) diploma, an equivalence certificate may still have to be requested from NARIC ; we recommend that you – if necessary – start the recognition procedure at NARIC as soon as possible. You must have this recognition no later than the date of appointment.

WE OFFER

You will receive a full-time employment contract (38 hours per week) of a fixed term, i.e. two years, as a scientific staff member, with the possibility of a renewal of the contract for a maximum period of two years.

Work schedule

Monday to Friday, 8h06 (including 30 minutes mandatory break) to work between 7am and 6pm.

Compensation

  • €38 08 (indexed annual gross starting salary) – Scale SW10.
  • 45 08€ (indexed annual gross starting salary) – Scale SW11 (after two years of scientific seniority).

This oral test aims to assess your motivation and your affinity for the position as well as your technical and generic competences.
